God Tatoos

Me and my sistiugler, Becky, Rebecca, and the Brazilian version which I can’t pronounce or spell, were discussing tatoos recently. In our day, you know, back before the wheel, tatoos were only found on people of ill repute. So we were considering how things have changed, and decided that if we were going to get tatoos, maybe we’d get God ones.
So I’m considering how I would do a God tatoo. Seems like I remember something about people in the past putting their business on their foreheads. So if I put one on my forehead, I’d probably put a Scripture verse, like “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 That would pretty well fill my whole forehead up if I made it readable. Maybe I could do it in lots of colors, since God’s creative and all.
Or if I wanted to put it on my forearm, it would be pretty cool to borrow Michelangelo’s finger of God so that it would look like I had two hands on that arm.
On the other hand (did you notice the pun) I’d need to use my back if I wanted to do my favorite Bible verse of all time “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith will not fail. And you, when you have turned, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:31 God never leaves anyone on the bench, I just love that! Besides, it ought to begin some interesting conversations.
How about a chin (the joy part) or maybe bicep (the strength part) one that says, “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” Neh. 8:10
My daughter-in-love has one on her calf. Lemme see, a calf one. “… For we walk by faith, not by sight.” II Cor. 5:7
Now I’ve always wanted one on my pinky pad. What to do, what to do? I know, “Jesus bent down and wrote with His finger on the ground.” John 8:6 That was when people were trying to blame a woman, and He suggested the one without sin heave the first rock. I need a good reminder now and then, this might be the one!
Then again, Bake says he doesn’t put fish or Jesus bumper stickers on his car because he doesn’t want his driving to be a poor witness. The other side of that coin is that a good Bible verse tatoo might change my behavior, for the good.
Actually, I could just become the tatooed woman, and have them all over myself.  Naw, weird is weird.
But I have one more idea. What if I had “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son” on the inside of one forearm, and “That whoever believes on Him, would have everlasting life” John 3:16 on the inside of the other forearm, and the only way to see them is to open my arms,  like Jesus did.

  1. Jane, I love this post! That last line- love.

And my little tattoo has nothing to do with God. My husband likes it, though 🙂
